Hello everyone! I’m a proud first-generation college student and DACA recipient. As a student, I was affiliated with Rachel Carson College. During my time at UCSC, I held a variety of campus roles like being a Peer Advisor and working in the Sustainability Office. I’m bilingual in English and Spanish, and I’m currently learning ASL and Japanese. I enjoy learning from others and believe that exploring different languages and cultures is a powerful way to break down communication barriers and build deeper connections.

I grew up in Los Angeles and I am of Mexican heritage, which has deeply shaped my commitment to environmental justice and community empowerment. I originally came to UCSC with the goal of giving back to my community through environmental advocacy, but it was through peer advising that I found another calling. Supporting fellow students…

…especially those with shared lived experiences, which became something I was truly passionate about. With encouragement from my own mentors, I realized I didn’t have to choose just one path. I could pursue both community-based advocacy and student support—two areas that reflect my values and bring me purpose.

In addition to my advising work, I also serve as a consultant and facilitator for organizations like SCAQMD, CARB, PSR-LA, WATTS, and SCOPE. Through these partnerships, I help lead air quality initiatives in South LA as part of the AB 617 Community Air Program. Whether I’m in a community meeting or a one-on-one advising appointment, my focus remains the same: to connect people with resources, amplify their voices, and support their ability to thrive.

All of my roles allow me to uplift the communities I care about—whether it’s helping a student navigate their college journey or working alongside residents to fight for environmental equity. That journey has taught me that life doesn’t always follow a single path. You can honor multiple passions and find ways to grow in both.

As a college advisor, I’m committed to supporting students holistically, whether you need guidance with academics, navigating the university system, or finding your place on campus. I’m here to walk alongside you every step of the way.

Hobbies:
I love watching movies, anime, Disney, and Marvel. Some of my favorite anime are Bleach, Samurai Champloo, Cowboy Bebop, and Ouran High School Host Club. I’m a big Grey’s Anatomy fan and enjoy getting wrapped up in long-running shows with strong character arcs.

I love gaming, especially story-rich titles like The Legend of Zelda and Kingdom Hearts. When I’m not watching something or playing a game, I enjoy trying new places to eat and discovering hidden gems.

Education:
BA, Environmental Studies with a concentration in Conservation Science and Policy, University of California, Santa Cruz

I am the first male-identified person in my family to attend and graduate from college. I am also the son of immigrants and a formerly undocumented immigrant myself who at 18 years old, in my first quarter of college, gained status. I understand the constant struggles students face and the barriers they must overcome to be successful in higher education. I am committed to working side by side with students and their families to identify and clarify their academic direction and educational goals and to help them develop meaningful plans with strategies for success.

My advising philosophy includes being an active listener, approaching each student holistically, and practicing trauma-informed care including affirmations to overcome self-sabotaging and negative thoughts, and providing a welcoming and brave space for students so that they can overcome barriers they face in college. Higher education has…

…made all the difference in my life, it is where I have learned and engaged in building what I once believed was out of reach. My undergraduate experience was invaluable which ultimately contributed to my passion for assisting others in achieving their academic and educational goals.

Through reflecting on my undergraduate career, I want to place a special emphasis on the contributions of my mentors, counselors, and college access coordinators because I have come to understand the important role and impact these individuals played in my life. As I reflect on my background, I want to ensure that current and future students have the resources, community, and advice to achieve their highest aspirations.

Hello 🙂 My story is that I was a non-traditional college student. I decided to return to college in my late twenties after having previously struggled in school. At the time, I was confused and unsure if school was the right path for me. Fortunately, I met with amazing advisors at both Cabrillo College and San José State who helped me clarify my educational goals and supported me in achieving them. I went from questioning whether I belonged in school to graduating with honors with both my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees.

Because of my own journey, I have deep compassion for students who are struggling to figure out what major to pursue or what career they want to work toward. My goal is to provide personalized support to help students unlock their full potential. I believe every student deserves access to resources and guidance that foster…

…both academic and personal growth. I strive to take a holistic approach to advising and use a strengths-based model to support students in an atmosphere of equity and inclusion.

Before stepping into my role as an Academic Advisor, I worked in a variety of helping professions, including the hospitality industry, substance abuse counseling, and serving as a Peer Advisor while completing my Master’s degree.

Hobbies:
In my free time, I love enjoying all the natural beauty that Santa Cruz has to offer, especially hiking and spending time at the beach. I’m a fitness enthusiast and enjoy all forms of movement including yoga, weightlifting, hiking, and Pilates. I also love traveling and visiting my mother, who lives in Austria. German is my second language and I’m currently learning Spanish!

To put it simply, education has made all the difference in my life. It is where I have watched and participated in building the impossible. Authentic care for our students, their well-being, and their sense of self as people who can make a difference are all part of my personal advising philosophy. As a young, first-generation college graduate, I have been fortunate to be a part of profoundly transformative experiences for other low income, first-generation college students of color. I have been honored with the opportunity to hear the voices of the most marginalized and in the process they offered me counter stories to what it means to be ‘successful’ in college. They chose time and time again to want to give back to their communities and this is a drive that is central to my own humanity and work at Oakes and Rachel Carson Colleges.

I am often reminded that access to higher education was gained through a long and historical legacy of resistance, where resistance represented a courageous obligation by those who have and continue to be oppressed to fight…

…against their subordination. As we construct the path for justice and equity, we must remember, “love is an act of will – namely, [it is] both an intention and an action. Will…implies choice. We do not have to love. We choose love” and it requires that we choose every time to want to make the difference. My drive to create change stems from the fact that getting an education was never just about me; this accomplishment is for all those who continue to stay committed to the struggle to enact the change we need to see in this world.
